Thesis Title: Studying the interaction of photography and globalization discourse with an overview of Sebastiao Salgado's works

By: Elaheh Abiri

Supervisor and Adviser: Farhad Soleymani

Abstract:

Globalization is an interconnected set of economic, political, social, and cultural factors that has challenged the traditional concept of time and space and also has changed many of the fundamental concepts of human societies. Globalization has a strong bond with capitalism so that many critics consider it to be a phenomenon of economic basis. Cultural globalization, as one of the important dimensions of this process, is always a subject of interest among scholars, and paying attention to Art as a link between cultures and civilization is always of particular importance. Obviously there has been a profound transformation in the concept of Art and methods of artistic expression concurrent with the world's alterations as a result of globalization. The focus of this study is ultimately to examine the interaction between the discourse of globalization and Art, and specially photography. It's obvious that in our world today, we are facing photos at any time and any place more than anything else. In today's real and virtual words and because of the remarkable advancement of Information Technology, these are photos that are affected by the globalization process more than any other element in the world and they are also playing a role in this process. In this study, also those photos of Sebastiao Salgado and Andreas Gursky which have used the discourse of globalization as an integral part of their work will be analyzed. Each of these photographers depicts the aspects and consequences of globalization in his own way.

Thesis Title: Pathology of technical and content characteristics in contemporary Iranian art photography (Years 1978 to 2011)

By: Kian Mohamadi

Supervisor: Reza Nabavi

Abstract:

We see some defects in Iran’s photography and especially in technical matters collaborating with other sections like exhibitions, as far as in some situations they can take the audience out of the artwork’s exact concept. It seems that in Iran’s art photography there’s a thought about the independence of this art genre from technical matters. Being of this defect can cause retardation of this field and taking distance from the up-to-date science of the world. The contemporary photographer may be able to use his tools well and may have devised arrangements for his idea, but when there is no proportion in the relationship between art and internal content, the result of the work may have very little artistic value. Also, in an age when the performance of work becomes even more important than the work itself in some cases, technical shortcomings from the use of the camera to holding exhibitions and festivals change the original work and even misunderstandings about the concept and aesthetics of the work.

In this study, we examine the causes of these retardations, their effects, and ways to improve the technical level. Numerous factors, including economic issues, intense this issue, to the point that the artist may not be satisfied with the final stage of his work, such as printing, and may even be unfamiliar with the types of old and new presentations. This weakness can be due to the misuse of the environment.

In this Thesis, considering the current conditions of contemporary Iran, an attempt is made to examine the relationship between the technical and content characteristics of art photography and to provide solutions to strengthen it. In the following, we will examine the works of some Iranian art photographers and in an analytical manner, we will review these works technically and in terms of content.

The hypothetical result of this Thesis is the improvement of the artist’s relationship with the technics of photography, and it is expected that in the end, useful solutions can be provided in this regard.

Thesis Title: A Study on The Concept of the Photograph Meaning in Analytic Philosophy with Focus on Wittgenstein’s Views

By: Mohamad Ashiani

Supervisor: Dr. Mohamad Khodadadi Motarjemzadeh

Abstract:

Wittgenstein’s philosophy, in continuation of Kant and Frere's philosophy, but recognizably distinct and based on the foundations of language, initially divides the realms of “sense” and “mean”, then studies the “meaning” of a phenomenon. This thesis investigates the relation between picture and language, and then meaning (what is literally known as the meaning of a photograph) and sensibility (what a person understands by looking at a photographic picture) through its endeavors to mark points in common between Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and Philosophical Investigations as two extreme points of Wittgenstein’s philosophical reflections. In other words, whether a photograph’s picture is a reflection of the real or a cultural representation is not a new inquiry, but this viewpoint may propose a new response to it. Therefore, the traditional visual culture – that is the visual culture of the West – from which the photograph is bred will be surveyed and traced back to the use of camera Lucida and camera obscura in painting (invention of photography) prior to invention of light-sensitive materials, and it will continue towards the discovery of light-sensitive emulsions (discovery of photography). Also, concentrated study of specific points of history of photography will be carried on as some type of a case study. According to Wittgenstein, sometimes we are better off just looking, instead of interpreting. In addition, the case of Marcel Duchamp directed the attention of art audiences towards the context of art, rather than the medium. That is a photo has a posterior sense and no meaning. What we consider the meaning of a photo, is obtained not from the photo itself, but only according to its context (art, social documentary, photojournalism, advertisements etc.).

Thesis Title: study on the concept of style in photography (Case study: The pictorialism in 1890 to 1920)

By: Morteza Sedighifard

Supervisor: Mehdi Moghimnejad

Abstract:

Each work of Art consists of a set of features that distinguish it from other works, which play an important role in the emergence of stylistic categories of works. Photographs as a work of art are no exception to this rule, and in fact each photograph has features that include it in a certain style. But the word style, which is one of the most widely used and debated words among the disciplines of art, has no clear meaning and validity due to its various uses in different theoretical discussions. Therefore, research is necessary to reach a ubiquitous definition of style. In this research, in order to analyze the concept of style and then explain the definition of style in photography using a case study. This study, in order to achieve a comprehensive definition of style in the visual arts, especially photography, by comparing the opinions of theorisian and experts, divides style into two areas, public and individual, and after reaching a definition of each, the factors affecting the emergence of style in photography has specified.

Thesis Title: Mythoanalysis of American contemporary staged photographers works case study: Arthur tress, Joel peter witkin, Gregory crewdson

By: Soudabeh Shaygan

Supervisor: Dr. Mohammad Khodadadi Motarjemzadeh

Abstract:

In this thesis some motifs which are unconsciously recurrent in photographs of American contemporary staged photographers and the similarity between them and the motifs of ancient myths have been studied. since some of this repetitive motifs derives from artist's collective unconscious mind and also myths have derived from this part of mind too it's supposed that both have the same motifs. The art analyzing method of Gilbert Durand: myth analysis, is completely suitable for this purpose so it's been used in this thesis as the structure of stud. Based on this method at first step repetitive motifs have been detected and in second step, due to the artist's personal life and social or political circumstances it's proved that some of that motifs had been repeated consciously or under influence of circumstance. then, at last step unconsciously repeated motifs compared whit the motifs of a mythical story or creature. due to the second step it's not logical to use this method for a number of photographers together it should be used for them one by one. therefore, in this thesis three American contemporary staged photographers have been studied; Arthur tress, joel-peter witkin, Gregory crewdson. for all three photographers the hypothesis was supported and the hidden mythical motifs have been found .in addition, the motifs which were repeated in photographs of all three photographers were similar to a mythical story which shows some interesting similarities between them.

Key words: myth, myth analysis, gilbert Durand, staged photographer, American photographer, joel-peter witkin, Arthur tress, Gregory Crewdson

Thesis TitleSociological Semiotic Analysis of Pilgrimage Photographs of Mashhad in the Digital Era

By: Vesal Torabi

Supervisor: Phd Mehdi Moghimnejad

Abstract:

Pilgrimage Photographs can be studied and researched from many aspects such as cultural, social, political, historical, semiotic, and the like. Semiotics takes place as a semantic process in the context of culture, so the study of these images is worth considering from a semiotic point of view. In this research, the author has tried to find a connection between the meaning, these images and society by using the concepts of social semiotics of the image. Although Pilgrimage Photographs is one of the most common types of photography in Iran, it has been less studied. A large percentage of Iranian families have a photo with this theme on their family albums, especially their old albums. With the decline of this genre of photography and due to the lack of archives of these photographs, as well as changes in the process and type of recording, the study and research in relation to it is very thought-provoking. The research method is descriptive-analytical and the photos are collected using field research. By examining the images, a lot of information was obtained about pilgrimage photography and cultural, social and political differences in the analog and digital eras. The present study analyzes the changes in relationships between family members and in clothing (especially women's clothing) over a period of about one hundred years. Moreover, the effects of studio photography in the transition from analog to digital and its influence on the customs and traditions that have prevailed in the culture of Imam Reza pilgrimage for many years have been studied in this research.
