Musicology (Ethnomusicology) in its modern meaning, includes the rules and study methods of a wide subset of theoretical trends such as historical studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Archeology, Semiotics, etc which studies the formation and interactions of music with areas such as social life, language, identity, religious beliefs, therapy, physiology, biology, gender, politics and immigration. It should be mentioned that among the new approaches of musicology, we can mention "Applied Musicology" which has made the use of musicology findings in order to improve the quality of life of the studied societies as the basis of work.

This theoretical trend under the title of "Musicology (Ethnomusicology)" has been included in the educational system of some Iranian universities in recent years. The Department of Musicology (Ethnomusicology) in the Faculty of Music of Art University has started its activity since 2013 in the field of attracting and teaching those interested in the master's level. The continuous members of this study group are Mr. Dr. Hamid Asgari Rabari (head of the faculty and director of the department), Dr. Mohammad Reza Azadefar (Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Sheffield, England) and Dr. Sayid Hossein Meysami (Ph.D. in Art Research from the University of Arts) in the relevant educational group.
