The Faculty of Music is located in Karaj Campus of University of Art. Academic music education in Iran began with the establishment of the "Music Branch" of Dar al-Funun School in 1247 AH. In the process of development, that institution was renamed to "Music School" (1997), "Government Music School" (1998), "Musician School" (1999) and "Higher Music Academy" (1997). After the Islamic Revolution of Iran, the "High Music Academy" and the "National Music Academy" (founded in 1328) were merged and joined the Art Academic Complex.

The music group of the art university complex started its educational activities in the field of military music and Iranian music in 1368, and since 1373, by changing the title of " Expert in Iranian music" to "Iranian Music Performance" and with adding "Classical Music Performance", it became the "Faculty of Music". During the following years of training in the fields of Military Music, Iranian Music Performance, Classical Music Performance, Composition and Musicology (Ethnomusicology) at the Faculty of Music of the University of Art, it has continued under the leadership of Mr. Sharif Lotfi, Prof. Mohammad Reza Azadefar, Dr. Sayid Hossein Meysami, Hamid Reza Dibazar and Dr. Hamid Askari Rabori.

Educational facilities

The educational spaces located in the main building and the second floor of building number 2 of the music faculty include 24 classrooms, 9 practice rooms and an amphitheater. The electroacoustic and experimental music site of the Faculty of Music of the University of Arts has provided the students with the opportunity to create works in the field of contemporary and electronic music with appropriate hardware and software facilities.

Research and Technology Affairs’ Office:

The Research Affairs’ Office of the Faculty of Music plans and implements all the administrative and executive activities of the Faculty of Music in the field of research. This office is responsible for all the correspondence and coordination of the Research Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Music.

Specialized archive and specialized library of the Faculty of Music:

The specialized library of the Faculty of Music with 170 Persian books, 341 Latin books, 23 Persian magazine titles (547 volumes), 196 Latin magazines, 551 thesis volumes, 83537 audio files, 468 photos and 1155 scores is located in the second building of the Music Faculty. This library welcomes professors and students of the music faculty on all business days.

Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory of Iranian Music:

The interdisciplinary research laboratory in the field of music affiliated to the Faculty of Music is the most important music study reference in the country. The aim of this laboratory is to support the studies of the fields of science and industry in music-related subjects to apply and prepare the field of national exploitation of the achievements of music studies and related sciences. This laboratory supports intra-university research and technology projects in the first phase and technological projects in interdisciplinary music subjects in the second phase. The audience of this laboratory is professors, students and technologists in the field of music studies and performance and researchers of interdisciplinary music studies. This laboratory, which is located in the second building of the faculty, is under the supervision of the Vice-Chancellor of research and technology of the faculty of music.

Research and technology events of the Faculty of Music:

Scientific, research and music technology events are planned and supported in two periodic and non-periodic ways in the area of Research and Technology Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Music. The most important periodical events of the Faculty of Music in this field are the holding of the research week in December every year, the holding of the Iranian Ethnomusicology Symposium on an annual basis and the biennial holding of the ritual and religious music of Iran.
